This oil painting of George Eliot is a copy made for J.W. Cross in 1881. George Eliot married John Cross in 1880, a few months before her death. The original was painted by Durade in 1850 and sold to the National Portrait Gallery in 1905.
This portrait is part of the George Eliot Collection.
