This solicitor was coroner for Coventry. In 1834 he was a trustee of Edwards' Charity (see PA101/143/2), in 1838 the assignee of the mortgage for the premises on which Broad Street Wesleyan Chapel, Foleshill was built (see PA101/152) and in 1842 trustee of the purchase by Joseph Bates of the site of 7/8 St. Peter's Street (see PA379/1). See PA328/7. His firm is found especially at series 2 of PA101. He died on 9 Oct 1852 (see PA101/12/177). He was Clerk to Foleshill Board of Guardians in 1843 (see PA295/40/83). See PA206/4/1. He was a West Orchard Chapel trustee from 1833 (see CCA/2/3/168/28-29: PA221/1/10) and interested in its estate the previous year (CCA/2/3/168/39-41). He was trustee for William Robinson's purchase and a sale of part of Harnall Fields, 1827-40 (see PA213/1/14). Mortgage assignee for John Carter's Pinley House, 1809-10, 1815-35 (see PA216/1/1-3,5,19-20). He was an executor of Joseph Whiting of Foleshill, 1834ff (PA216/1/16, 17, 19-20). He was an executor of Jeremiah Goodall, 1826 (see BA/A/B/28/6: BA/B/P/389/5), having been a trustee for Goodall's purchase of a stable in the New Buildings estate, 1816-20 (BA/A/G/32/2). He was a trustee for the mortgage by Samuel Masters of Earl Street premises, 1810 (see BA/A/G/6/1.XV; BA/A/G/10/3,5,6) and mortgage assignee for premises on the corner of West Orchard and Cross Cheaping, 1833-43 (BA/A/G/26/69-72), and for land of William Hitchins at Whitley, 1838 (BA/D/A/47/46. XXIV, XXV). He acted as an attorney to deliver seisin - see BA/B/P/398/3: PA491/27/16. He was trustee for the use by Richard Hands of Burges premises as a dyeworks, 1840 (PA436/3/13) and of other land there, 1851 (PA436/3/16). He was mortgage assignee for Foleshill land, 1833-46 (see PA436/6/25-27). PA440/3/2; PA440/6/28,29: PA1681/53/1; PA1681/66/14 are married women's certificates which he processed. He was mortgage assignee for Warwick Court, Gosford Street, 1808-10 (see PA440/6/11-15 passim). He acted for the ribbon manufacturer William Robinson junior when he bought Hill Cross property in 1834 - see P454/1/15. He was at Little Park Street premises in 1830. He was named an executor in the 1834 will of Thomas Pepper (PA55/21/20) and was an executor of William Gater (q.v.) in 1832 (see PA55/72/2). With his partner John Carter (q.v.), Dewes was involved in sale of the "Unicorn" and other Cross Cheaping property, 1831 (CCA/2/3/179/34-35,48: PA1681/27/1.LIX,LX). Richard, Thomas and Henry Dewes were mortgagees for Conduit Meadow, Coundon, 1846-52 (PA56/80/44,52). Mortgage-assignee for Much Park Street premises, 1809 (CCA/2/3/312/4-6: PA56/86/1.XIV); for Smithford Street houses, 1840 (PA56/117/13-14). An executor of the ironmonger Edward Reynolds, 1832 (PA56/92/36: CCA/2/3/814/12-13). He was trustee for the weaver Richard Stafford (q.v.)'s purchase of land near Swanswell, 1841 (PA56/94/2). Dewes was involved with the reform of the city's charities in 1836 - see PA56/127/1.XII. Trustee for sale of Spon Street property, 1814 (PA56/141/33-34). Richard Dewes was trustee for his son Henry (q.v.)'s further charge upon Edgwick premises in 1844 (PA491/20/20.XXXIX). In 1828 Dewes was trustee for the ribbon-manufacturer George Elliott (qv.)'s purchase of Lockhurst Lane premises (see PA491/21/4-5); in 1831 for the weaver Henry Hewitt's of Longford property (PA491/55/11-12); in 1851 for the grocer Richard Masser (q.v.)'s of Foxford houses and a close (PA491/56/2.IV). CCA/2/3/226/12 shows that in 1851 Dewes was trustee for the winemerchant John Whittem (q.v.)'s purchase of the Mill in the Hole estate, Whitley. Dewes was trustee for the auctioneer Thomas Grimes (q.v.)'
