A solicitor and conchologist, Browett donated £10 towards the building of St. Michael's Parish Schools (opened on 7th. Mar.,1853) and gave 10gn. to the School of Art in 1859. Town Clerk 1859-93, professionally Browett for example received apprentices from Bayley's School (see PA368/118/2; PA368/123/3; PA368/128/10) including the local solicitor-to-be John Haymes (PA368/128/17) in 1880; he also discharged Henry Lea as a successful apprentice in 1867 (PA368/134/44) and other boys (PA368/134/86,101), was appointee for land in the future Avon St., Stoke in c.1848 (see PA333/1), a perpetual commissioner of oaths (PA353/1/41: PA1681/50/13) for a married woman's acknowledgement of having executed a deed, mortgagee of property at St. John's St. and in Stoke in 1870 (PA101/1/435) and custodian, as Town Clerk, of charity-documents (see PA101/136/16). The firm survived in Bayley Lane (see PA101/12/684-686: PA2398/1/2) until 2001, when it merged with Mander, Hadley & Co. of The Quadrant and the residuary records were transferred to Coventry Archives as PA2398. PA219/4/8 is a letter from Browett about his mother, who in 1849 was dying from dropsy. Browett had land at Bishopgate Green in the 1890s - see PA202/15/2. See PA242/3/6. As Town Clerk, during the 1880s Browett was concerned with improving the city's water-supply. In 1850 he covenanted to hold for David Laxon deeds concerning property at North St., Stoke - see PA451/1/2. He held deeds for similarly-mortgaged property nearby at Shakespeare Street, 1850-78 (PA56/24/1,8.VI,VII,9; PA56/25/1,2). See PA158/6. See PA444/1 fol. 5. As Town Clerk, Browett enrolled apprentices - see PA462/1 fol. 2. In the 1881 census he is described as a 60 year old solicitor living at Westfield House, Radford. Browett was secretary of the Coventry Cotton Spinning & Weaving Co. from 1866 - see PA466/16/1-3; PA466/17/1; PA466/20/1. He was mortgagee for land at Ryton, Bulkington parish (1854 - PA466/4/1 p.523); 10 & 11, Craven St., Chapelfields (1861 - PA466/6/2 fol. 180A); and for "The Gables", St. Nicholas' St., Radford (1888-92: PA466/21/2). He had the sites of 29, Wren St. (1892-95: PA466/4/5 fol. 72) and 29, Walsgrave Road (1893 - PA466/7/1 fol. 230). Browett acted as a trustee for the solicitor John Royle (q.v.)'s will, 1866-80 - see PA440/6/37-41 passim: PA1681/33/1. In 1869 Browett ordered a copy of Sharp's "Coventry Antiquities" - see PA506/148/4. He was in 1868 solicitor to the proposed Coventry & Great Western Junction Railway - see PA506/243/131. see PA55/54/5. Browett added Hollow Farm in the north-western angle between the Coventry-Nuneaton railway line and the Radford Road to his estate on the other side of the road in 1891 (see PA1681/30/4) but bought the land for "Westfield House" in 1875 and was still living there in 1904 (PA1681/30 passim). He owned Holly Bank Farm, Little Heath from 1872 (PA1681/32/31,32). He dying on 12 Feb 1909, PA1681/32/36,37 relate to Browett's will. He was mortgagee for B.H. Butterworth's Cross Cheaping and Little Butcher Row property, 1875 (PA1681/33/6). See PA1681/35/39. Browett mortgaged property at Rugby and Barras Green, Stoke in 1853 (PA1681/42/1). He was an executor of the retired Eathorpe, Warwickshire farmer John Taylor's will, 1874-78 (CCA/2/3/136/7: PA811/3/25: PA1681/60/1). For the firm in his time, see PA1681/65/5,9; PA1681/73/3. For his executorship of [his relative] John Robinson and his consequent involvement with Castle Grove, Kenilworth and Victoria Street, Hillfields property from 1896 until he died in 1909, see PA1681/67/11. He owned Rothesay Terrace, Barras Lane from 1895 - see PA1681/72/12. Browett was mortgagee for a shop on the corner of Canterbury Street and Colchester Street, Hillfields, 1891-96 (PA56/7/15.XXVIII). He bought part of Little Close, Radford in 1855 - see PA56/102/3. In 1865 Browett bought part of Alsop's Close, Gosford Green - see PA56/137/1; PA56/138/19. Vendor's solicitor for the sale of other Gosford Green property, 1864-65 (PA56/138/15,18). He testified to the return of city M.P.s in 1857 - see PA96/65/6. In 1859 Browett dealt with the Drapers' Company - see PA468/4/3/69/35. Bablake School sold in 1890 Radford land which he occupied - see PA489/2/2/4. Qua Town Clerk, see PA2297/2/1. One of Browett's late acts as a solicitor was to receive the acknowledgement in 1907 by Ada Florence Goodwill (wife of the solicitor's clerk Albert John Goodwill and daughter of the grocer William Calcott (q.v.)) of a deed for a mortgage upon Foleshill Road, Bishopgate Green land - see PA491/68/13. According to PA491/69/1.I,II, Browett bought Honey Field and Pickledy Pears south of Cash's Lane and west of Foleshill Road in 1868 and Old Causeway nearby in 1870, mortgaged them all for development in 1897 (PA491/69/1.III,IV) and sold them in 1901 to the builder William Samuel Barker (q.v.) (PA491/69/2): he was also trustee for Henry Browett (q.v.)'s sale of part of Great Hill Close thereabouts in 1872 (see PA2398/1/1/2/1). See PA491/84/16. Browett was appointed a Spencer's Charity trustee under the founder's 1886 will - see PA2398/6/4/14/3. Browett was married to Catherine, the niece of Sarah Glennan the wife of the postmaster Timothy Peters Glennan - see PA2473/2/206. As mortgage-assignee for a Great Butcher Row/Cross Cheaping cornerhouse in succession to William Browett (q.v.), 1864, see CCA/2/3/212/77. CCA/2/3/241/26; CCA/2/3/264/30 show that Thomas acted as trustee when the broker Joseph Browett (q.v.) bought Palmer Lane premises in 1845. Mortgage-assignee for George Barber (q.v.)'s Cross Cheaping shops, 1892-97 (CCA/2/3/902/21 (endorsements)). Mortgagee for the watch-manufacturer Francis Silveston (q.v.)'s Vicar Lane messuages, 1885-89 (CCA/2/3/34/47-48). The bricklayer James Whitehead made an equitable charge (CCA/2/3/951/34) with Thomas Browett in 1876 for the "White Lion", etc. at Gosford Green, a Craven Street house and one at Yardley Street. Thomas Browett's having property near Priory Court strengthened his involvement with Henry Browett's holding of property there (see CCA/2/3/155/16,19.VI,VIII,IX).
