Thomas Clarke, auctioneer, was in a partnership with Henry Brown (c.1846-53:- see PA101/9/107: PA54/128/20: PA56/6/106,108,109; PA56/20/8; PA56/55/2; PA56/95/3: PA468/4/5/5/1); he leased premises on the corner of Hertford St. and Smithford St. in 1856 (see PA101/9/108), acted for Bayley's School trustees in purchasing railway-shares (1866-69: PA368/47) and was named an executor under the draft wills of Thomas Brown (1847: PA101/1/613) and William Slingsby (1862: PA101/9/68) and the latter's probated one (1883: CCA/2/3/233/31.I); he was from 1854 a shareholder in the Coventry Corn Exchange and Public Room Company (PA102/1). Clarke contributed £10 to St. Michael's Parish Schools (opened on 7th. Mar., 1853) and 10gn. plus 1gn. towards the School of Art's 1859 rebuilding. The firm was later called Clarke & Cope. In 1865 Clarke owned the "Old Rose and Crown", Burges (PA171/38/1), which he had mortgaged to William Davies Jephcott (q.v.) in 1851 (see CCA/2/3/221/27). Clarke died on 20th. Mar., 1885 in his sixty-ninth year - see PA279/10/334; PA279/44/271. Clarke bought Doe Bank, Spon End in shares, 1868-84 (BA/A/G/35/1.XXIIIff passim,2). He valued Junction St. and Hertford Place houses, 1866 (PA436/5/57: PA466/5/1 p.37). He auctioned Stivichall Villa and the "Stivichall Arms" in 1874 (PA466/12/21). In 1856 he sold a St. Nicholas' St. house (PA409/1/4). In 1879, Clarke renounced his executorship of Dennis George Barnes (q.v.)' will (see CCA/2/3/201/12.V,VI; CCA/2/3/909/14: PA440/5/37). He was a trustee of the solicitor John Royle (q.v.)'s will (1866-80:- CCA/2/3/148/8: PA440/6/37-41: PA1681/33/1), auctioning the relevant property. He sold St. John's advowson (1865 - PA500/73/1). In 1869 Clarke ordered a copy of Thomas Sharp's "Coventry Antiquities" - see PA506/147/11. In 1866 he auctioned Birmingham Banking Co. property (see PA562/25). He was a mortgagee of Reverend Arthur William Gregory (q.v.), 1859-68 (PA1681/41/26-34 passim). Clarke auctioned Corley, Warwickshire land in 1871 (PA1681/47/2: PA1484/31/3). He inventorised and valued licensed premises for William Ratliff, 1870-83 (PA56/6/173,174,179,180). Clarke arbitrated between Leavesley & Hands when they dissolved their silkdyeing partnership in 1859 (see PA56/51/8). He auctioned the late plasterer William Webb's diverse properties in 1860 (PA56/65/9,10) and the ribbon-weaver Daniel Gilbert's Hillfields houses in 1863 (PA56/71/10). Valued Mount Street, Chapelfields houses, 1874 (PA56/134/4,5). Clarke was a trustee under the innkeeper George Hall's will, 1848 - see PA56/138/11.VI - and auctioned relevant land in 1864, receiving mortgage-money the next year (see PA56/138/12,14,17). In 1867 he was proposed as a Church Charities trustee - see PA2297/2/2. In 1869 Clarke auctioned the "Hollyhurst" estate, Bulkington, Warwickshire (PA2297/9/6). He was named an executor of the former publican George Hall (q.v.) in 1848 and so acted in 1850 (see CCA/2/3/156/8.VIII,10: PA491/9/4.XVII,XIX). Clarke was described as an accountant in 1855 when he was an assignee of the financially-embarrassed grocer Thomas Pratt (q.v.) - see CCA/2/3/212/51.XII,52. In 1878 Clarke auctioned a small farm at Walsgrave (CCA/2/3/111/26). He was named an executor of the maltster Charles Graham Rose (q.v.) in 1873 (CCA/2/3/811/5.I: PA2770/52/1.VI). Brown & Clarke sold part of Sir Thomas White's Charity's Swanswell Estate in 1850 - see CCA/2/3/774/1. Clarke auctioned Broadgate, Derby Lane and Spon Street property in 1878 - see CCA/2/3/187/61; the "Leopard", 64, Smithford Street in 1881 - see CCA/2/3/167/50; Smithford Street, Vicar Lane and Hall Green property in 1869 - see CCA/2/3/34/38. He was trustee when the fishmonger James Blythe (q.v.) bought Market Place property in 1859 - see CCA/2/3/175/10. Clarke auctioned the ironmonger Thomas Lambert Gillott's estate in 1881 - see CCA/2/3/140/59,60. In 1877 he auctioned Radford toll gatehouse; 2-4 and 39, Cross Cheaping; 53, West Orchard; part of Hearsall Common; Mill Yard, Cox Street, tenements; and London Road, ground at Whitley - see CCA/2/3/168/50: PA2710/8/4. A "Coventry Standard" shareholder, 1848 (PA2546/1). He auctioned 9, Victoria Street, Hillfields (1866 - PA2710/1/15); the Corley, Warwickshire estate which Joseph Cash bought (1871 - PA2710/3/1), an Albert Street[, Butts] house and a life-interest in 5, Duke Street, Chapelfields (1857 - PA2710/8/2,3); and the "Fleur-de-Lis" inn at, 43, Smithford Street and Coventry Cotton-Spinning & -Weaving Co. Ltd. and Leigh Mills Co. Ltd. shares (1885 - PA2710/8/7). Qua executor of Susanna Barnes, 1876-78, see PA2713/1/5; PA2713/4/1. Sold Hollyberry Hall estate, Allesley, 1878 (see PA2307/62/1). Clarke auctioned 30-31, Fleet Street; 19 & 20, New Street; and the "Sea Horse" public house, New Street in 1861 following a Rotherham family Chancery suit (see PA2770/26/23,28); auctioned 34, Earl Street, 1879 (PA2770/27/11). As a land valuer acting for Coventry Rural Sanitary Authority, 1876, see PA2770/68/1.I. PA2816/1/6 shows that Brown & Clarke sold Whitefriars' Lane property in 1845. Valued part of Mattersons' Cross Cheaping estate, 1868, of which he was a mortgagee from the following year until 1883 - see PA811/1/63,65. Sold 9 & 10, Burges and Bull Yard property, 1860 - see CCA/2/3/742/29,30. Sold William Steele Barnes(q.v.)' property, 1860 (see CCA/2/3/396/31.VII.N.B.). Qua share-broker, 1857, see CCA/2/3/264/36,37. Qua furniture-auctioneer, 1856, see CCA/2/3/264/37(attachment). Brown & Clarke sold a Much Park Street residence in 1843 - see CCA/2/3/314/39. Qua Wale's Charity trustee, see PA704/91/13. He was named as executor of Martha Clarke of Crick, Northamptonshire in 1853 (see CCA/2/3/13/18) and thereby acquired a share in Much Park Street property, with others obtaining more of it from 1854 (see CCA/2/3/13/30,32,34,36.III,V).
