With William Prime, he was Treasurer to the corporation from 1822, and mayor in 1837-38 (see PA468/1/3/2; PA468/5/16/1); in 1823 he was a turnpike trustee (see PA353/1/19-20). See PA101/1/60-65; PA101/11/997. A Wheatley's Charity trustee in 1847, Beck died the next year at Bath (cf. PA101/138/6: PA468/5/3/43/58). Living at Pinley, Beck bought Smithford St. premises on the corner of Greyfriars' Lane (1810) but sold them for Hertford St.'s laying-down five years later (see CCA/2/3/34/73.XII; CCA/2/3/458/20.I: PA242/1/28-31), of which he was also a trustee from 1812 (see PA242/1/33,36) - cf. his purchase of land behind Greyfriars' Lane in 1811 (CCA/2/3/458/12-13: PA56/85/1.IX). Until 1822 the firm was Beck & Adams, bankers (see PA221/3/72) but thereafter Beck & Prime (see PA221/3/82). When in partnership with H.C. Adams (q.v.), he petitioned for bankruptcy against James Hill's estate in 1816 (see PA66/3/3). See PA141/1. He was a Bablake Boys' Charity trustee in 1841 (see PA152/15/2). See PA14/8/26 for his mayoral activity. PA21/2/49,51 show Beck's appointment as a J.P., 1836, 1837. He was a member of the Cappers' Company in 1827 - see PA184/1/8. Admitted to the Drapers' Company, 1813 (PA468/1/1/101). A Joseph Chambers' Charity trustee, 1838 - see BA/A/B/19/8. BA/B/F/32: PA56/11/30 refer to his tithe lawsuit against the rector of Allesley in 1829-30. On the city council, 1836-41. Beck had the "Windmill" estate, Asthill, 1803 - see PA466/13/1-2. As corporation treasurer with his successive partners, see PA54/108/64,76; PA54/109/13,26,29; PA54/110/11,17,31; PA54/111/6,17; PA54/112/12,18,31,36; PA54/113/9,17,37,42; PA54/114/12,23,37,42; PA54/115/14,39; PA54/116/13,23; PA54/118/20. In 1830 Beck lived at Allesley Hall and operated from High Street. He was a Church Charities trustee, fl. 1837 - see PA500/10/1; PA500/16/22.III; PA500/65/1: PA56/127/1.XII. Qua Henry VIII Grammar School trustee, see PA500/26/1,2; PA500/30/1; PA500/32/1; PA500/36/1-3; PA500/40/1; PA500/41/1; PA500/42/1; PA500/44/1; PA500/45/2; PA500/48/1; PA500/55/2; PA500/57/1. Beck & Adams lent William Newcombe (q.v.) £2,955, 1813-19 (see PA55/61/1.XIII,XIV: PA849/28/2-4). Beck & Prime lent Eli Wise Peters (q.v.) over £2,000 (CCA/2/3/179/30-33: PA1681/27/1.XXVIII,XXIX). The butcher Thomas Goodman (q.v.)'s wife petitioned that he would accept him on a yearly tenancy so as to save their Palmer Lane premises in 1834 (PA56/66/24); Beck & Prime took on deposit the property's deeds, so Beck's executors were involved with them later (PA56/66/25-30): they transferred their business to the Coventry & Warwickshire Banking Co. in 1835 (PA56/66/30). The ribbon-manufacturers William Spencer and Edward Everton (qq.v.) assured to Beck and Prime their property at Courthouse Green and Causeway Lane, Foleshill, 1826-29 (PA56/114/13,21). Qua Bablake Boys' trustee, see PA56/126/2 (at Wolston, Warwickshire, 1844). In 1836 he was proposed as a trustee of the General Charities and became one for Sir Thomas White's Charity and those relating to Bablake Boys' Hospital the following year (PA56/127/1.XII). For Beck's involvement with the Drapers' Company, 1815-19, see PA468/4/3/23/27; PA468/4/3/27/16 (master, 1819); PA468/4/5/4/1,2 (living at Wolston, Warwickshire, 1842),3,5,6. It was as executor of his brother and her husband that James Beck was interested in a £2,400 mortgage made by the Drapers' Company in 1831 with Elizabeth Beck (see PA468/5/3/43/54,55). For his interest in the "Peeping Tom" on the corner of Hertford Street and Smithford Street, 1813, cf. PA2817/1. Beck & Adams were interested in Bancroft Lane premises, 1821-25 (see PA811/2/20-22). He was involved with Little Park Street messuages, 1838 - see CCA/2/3/185/21-22. Beck & Prime were trustees for Hertford Street and Much Park Street property from 1824, in Beck's case until 1841 - see CCA/2/3/13/15,37.
