Of Pears and Franklin, Upper Well Street, ribbon manufacturers in 1850, he was a trustee of West Orchard Chapel from 1833 (see CCA/2/3/168/28-29,46: PA101/8/768; PA101/150/2), a Freemen's Trustee and a Trustee of the General Charities (Sir Thomas White's Branch), Simon Norton's Charity (PA56/7/13.XI) and Wheatley's Charity (PA1681/26/1). Mayor in 1842, he renounced that year his trusteeship under the will of Nathaniel Merridew (see PA101/7/125) and was treasurer of the Industrial Home for Poor Girls. He gave 10 guineas towards Holy Trinity Church Schools (opened, 1 Sep 1854) and 20 guineas towards the School of Art's 1859 rebuilding. See PA333/6; PA368/108/6. A creditor of Charles Bray (q.v.) in 1864, he was still alive when the money was paid off in 1875 - see PA202/7/5. PA198 shows that in 1856 and 1866 he was a Sir Thomas White's Charity trustee. A chamberlain, 1829. A Holy Trinity churchwarden in 1837. For the Merridew trusteeship, see BA/A/G/26/72. He was a trustee of Bond's Hospital (BA/D/D/29/1,4) and of Bablake School (BA/D/H/24/2: CCA/2/3/98/6.I: PA1681/30/4: PA56/65/12 (appointed, 1854); PA489/5/16/1). On the city council, 1841-47, 1850-56, 1858. He was interested in Little Heath leaseholds, 1877 - see PA466/4/1 page 429. In 1894 he was reappointed a General Municipal Charities trustee under a new scheme - see PA476/2/1. At Upper Well Street (1830). Pears was involved in sale of Allesley land, 1877 (PA1681/44/4). Pears & Franklin supplied a reference when the grocer William Peters (q.v.) in 1834 successfully applied to become Drapers' Company summoner - see PA468/5/8/2. Through his wife, Pears was interested (1835-46) in Coundon land in succession to his sister-in-law Ann Bray of whom he was an executor - see PA491/93/5.VI-IX passim. A British School trustee, 1840-83 (PA2398/6/2/8/8,12). A founder-trustee of Well Street Independent Chapel from 1827 - see CCA/2/3/201/26-32 passim. Pears was one of Anne Tatlock's executors, 1872-77 (see CCA/2/3/432/11). Having married Elizabeth the daughter of the ribbon-manufacturer Jonathan Bray(q.v.), Pears became trustee for his brother-in-law James Bray's purchase of the family business (see CCA/2/3/314/33-36 passim (1834-36)) and for his brother-in-law Charles Bray's Much Park Street property (1836ff - CCA/2/3/312/18-19,21,27; CCA/2/3/314/49.I).
