A mercer. Mayor in 1747, hence during 1748, while still mayor, he went to visit the city's potential election candidate Samuel Greatheed (q.v.) - see PA1484/77/132. He regularised the disposition of Smith's Charity by filing information in Chancery on 18 Aug 1758. He was a trustee under the will of Ann Inge in 1762 (see PA101/1/273: PA202/10/2,5,12), of the marriage settlement of John Clarke junior with Susanna Lucas (see PA346/40-41) and of Sir Thomas White's Loan (see PA101/8/899; PA101/137/2,4,6: PA1023/5-6). He was a mortgagee of West Orchard land in 1756 and 1778 (see PA346/47-48), a J.P. by 1775 (see PA347/1/1). In 1763 he had land at Exhall (PA101/127). See PA101/8/168-169; PA101/150/1: PA242/2/7.IV, V. He occupied a Smithford Street house (see CCA/2/3/34/73.IV: PA242/1/22-23). He was a sheriff in 1741. Dead by 1783 when he was described as a mortgage trustee who became insolvent (PA490/14-15). From 1743 to 1756 he was a trustee of the marriage settlement between Thomas Nutt and the daughter of William Freeman (q.v.) - see PA115/6,8,10. PA8/8/2 is a bill from him to the Bakers' Company for processional silks. A chamberlain, 1740. An administrator of Jesson et al's bread dole, 1765-80 (PA17/36/1-10). See M.J. He was feoffee of New Court, Gosford Street, 1760-61 (BA/A/B/26/1,3; BA/A/B/27/12-14) and for a Spon End messuage (1771 - BA/A/B/66/1). He was a trustee of Samuel Edwards' Charity (BA/B/J/6/28,33-35). He occupied part of Harnall Fields (BA/D/A/11/3; BA/D/A/24/35). Qua trustee under the will of the Inge women, see BA/D/A/47/16,50.IV. He was a Baker's Charity feoffee - see PA500/71/1. See PA560/3. He renounced probate of the apothecary George Welton (q.v.) in 1780 (PA56/80/29). Named in 1749 an executor of the mayor Thomas Hunt (q.v.) - see PA56/91/2. In 1747 he was a participant in the indenture of return for the city M.P.s (PA96/59/7). He was a feoffee for a High Street tenement, 1753 (PA96/71/19.XXXVII). In 1776 John Remington (q.v.) wanted a corporation lease of his assigned to Freeman (BA/H/Q/F8/1/123). Freeman was appointed a feoffee of Baker's and Billing's Charities in 1764 - see PA489/4/40/3-4; PA489/4/43/3. He was among those who swore the return of writ for the election of the Honourable Andrew Archer and James Hewitt (qq.v.) as Members of Parliament for Coventry, 1761 - see PA1484/61/2. CCA/2/3/180/29 is an 1812 administration with Freeman's 1781 will annexed which two London businessmen called Wilson verified in 1783. CCA/2/3/34/4 refers to his purchase of Whitefriars' Lane property in 1767 along with Samuel Oldham (q.v.). In 1746 William Keeling (q.v.) named him an executor (see CCA/2/3/135/3; CCA/2/3/582/1.II). A 1783 Coventry History Centre trade directory calls Freeman "esq." and general receiver of the Land Tax, working from High Street.
