Born on 1 Jul 1843 the son of William Iliffe and the grandson of Isaac Morrell (qq.v.), on 11 Oct 1873 Iliffe married Annette Coker of Guernsey (who benefited under the 1890 draft wills of Ann Williams of Leamington Spa - see PA101/8/418,419) and died on 5 Jul 1917, a J.P. and owner of Allesley Hall; he benefited under his father William's 1854 draft will (PA101/8/697). Proprietor of the "Coventry Times" from 1888, Iliffe employed Alfred Harmsworth (later Lord Northcliffe) for three years, and published cycling and motoring journals and the "Midland Daily Telegraph" from 1891 (which was Liberal until 1897 and became the "Coventry Evening Telegraph" in 1941 following the bombing of its works the previous year), acquiring the 'Coventry Herald' in 1915. See PA368/76/25 for an 1877 bill; also PA333/16 and PA353/16/189 for his interest in 1898 and 1906 in Avon Street and Park Road property respectively. In 1887 Iliffe received a Baker, Billing and Crow's School apprentice - see PA26/10 fol. 297. Iliffe was interested in "Grove House", Coundon in 1905 (see PA279/44/8798) but settled at "Birch Tree" nearby, yet was still then interested (1913) in "Grove House" - see PA279/44/11478,11556,11562,11581,11889; he was interested in Eastern Green land, 1917 - see PA279/44/12284. Iliffe had property near Smithford Street, 1896 - see PA288/5/3. He was lessor of 49, St. Patrick's Road (1900 - PA466/4/1 p.58; PA466/5/4 p.37); 21, Friars Road (1903 - PA466/4/2 p.136; PA466/5/1 fol. 68); 70, St. Patrick's Road (1903 - PA466/4/2 p.144); 51, St. Patrick's Road (1900 - PA466/4/4 pp. 234,235); "The Limes", St. Patrick's Road (1899 - 1906: PA466/4/5 fol. 4); 8, Friars Road (1904 - PA466/5/1 p.240); Mile Lane property (1915 - PA466/5/1 p.276); 3, Park Road (1912 - PA466/5/1 p.313); 35, St Patrick's Road (1900 - PA466/5/4 p .93); 8, Park Road (1899 - PA466/6/1 fol. 103); 17, Manor Road (1899 - PA466/6/1 fol. 193); land at the corner of Manor and St. Patrick's Roads (1897 - 1901: PA466/6/2 fol .166); 40, Park Road (1908 - PA466/7/1 fol. 284); 33, St. Patrick's Road (1900 - PA466/7/2 fol. 274); 12, Stoney Road (1917 - PA466/7/2 fol. 344); 27A, Friars Road (1903 - PA466/7/2 fol 401); and 2A, Manor Road (1899 - PA466/8/1 fol. 423). Iliffe was mortgagee of 4, Meriden Street, Coundon (1895 - PA466/4/1 p.144). He sold 8, Warwick Street, Earlsdon (1911 - PA466/5/5 p.43) and was interested in 3, White Street (1883-88: PA466/8/1/ fol. 271). Iliffe leased 24 & 25, Smithford Street from Baron Cheylesmore in 1895 - see PA2723/4.VII(f). White's 1874 directory has Iliffe & Son as printers, stationers and rag merchants at 12, Smithford Street, at which address they were trading as paper dealers in 1883 (see PA2307/18/7/37).
