During the mid nineteenth century he was a solicitor practising at Coventry but in 1846 moved to Nuneaton (see PA101/4/74 for the purchase of J.W. Buchanan's practice, and PA101/2/62). In 1864 his firm was called Dewes & Norton (see PA101/11/927, 928, 933, 934). In 1852 he was appointed an executor of his father Richard Dewes (see CCA/2/3/4/22; CCA/2/3/573/44: PA101/12/540) and became an Assistant Clerk to the County Clerk in 1854. See PA101/12/115. Born in 1818. Trustee for the auctioneer Henry Brown (q.v.)'s Whitley land, 1841 (PA56/37/1). He was clerk to the Governors of Nuneaton Grammar School 1847-1881 and High Bailiff of the County Court by 1900 when his firm was Dewes & Brock-Harris of New Bridge Street, Nuneaton. When the 1841 census was taken he was living in the Toldish Hall district of Foleshill parish. In 1867 he had land in Foleshill - see PA171/41/1. He was a trustee for the purchase by William Eaves of Hill Street messuages, 1846 - see PA184/4/5. That same year he was trustee for the purchase by John Walton of Harnall Fields land, part of which he occupied (PA213/1/13). He was mortgagee for a Burges house, 1846-50 - see BA/A/G/21/1,2,4. For Dewes & Brock-Harris see PA403/174/3; PA403/178/2-8 passim. In 1851 he was mortgagee for Burges premises - see PA436/3/15,17. He had "The Limes", Edgwick (1844 - PA466/4/2 page 215). He was mortgagee for land at Hall Green, 1851-63 (PA466/5/1 page 294), and for 43 and 44 Well Street, 1847-62 (PA466/5/2 page 190). See PA466/12/32, 35: PA519/4. As the registrar of the County Court Office, Nuneaton see PA526/95/1; PA526/122/1. He was trustee for the purchase by William Eaves (q.v.) of a Spon Street house (PA540/3/3). See PA55/53/3. Assignee to fulfil the terms of the draper John Ball (q.v.)'s will, 1843-92 (PA1681/37/2). Richard, Thomas and Henry Dewes were mortgagees for Conduit Meadow, Coundon, 1846-52 (PA56/80/44,52). An executor and trustee of the will of the innkeeper George Hall, 1848-65 (see PA56/138/11.VI,17). For Dewes & Norton, see also PA2297/9/9 (1869). He was named an executor of the former publican George Hall (q.v.) in 1848 and so acted in 1850 (see CCA/2/3/156/8.VIII,10: PA491/9/4.XVII,XIX). Dewes had in 1874 a quarry in Caldecote parish, Warwickshire [White's directory]. See PA491/41/9. He was trustee for the watchmaker George Clarke (q.v.)'s purchase of Saint Peter's Street, Hillfields land in 1844 - see PA491/45/2. Dewes was an executor of the Foleshill ironmonger Thomas Cooper (q.v.) (1841 - PA2473/2/130). In 1857 he owned property in Whitefriars' Lane (PA2248/1/12). See PA2248/1/14. CCA/2/3/757/18 shows that in 1846 Dewes was trustee for William Iliffe's purchase of Stoke Court, Gosford Street. As vestee of Charlotte Vale, nee Ryley, 1846, see CCA/2/3/276/16; CCA/2/3/757/19: PA221/4/9. As one of Richard Dewes' offspring, he sold his interest in Well Street premises in 1853 - see CCA/2/3/19/47. See PA2684/10/1/55. Dewes was in 1844 trustee for Thomas Hembury(q.v.)'s purchase of Spon Street tenements - see CCA/2/3/814/16; in 1843 for Jonathan Keene(q.v.)'s of West Orchard property - see CCA/2/3/128/38. In 1906 aged 88 he made a declaration as to ownership of the Governors of King Edward VI school to land at Kingsfield, Stoke - see PA2002/16/1.VI. Sold Lucas Court houses in 1853 - see PA811/3/19.
