Under his will, Thomas Bond founded a hospital to accommodate ten almsmen (it was much-rebuilt, 1832-34) with a woman to care for them, all chosen by the Trinity Guild; the lands were worth £49/11/7 p.a., whereout £17/6/8 was distributed yearly (i.e. 6/8 per week), £3/16/- used for buying the men's gowns, 13/4 for alms, £1/3/4 for wood and £2 paid to the bailiff; Bond's Hospital (in Hill St.) was granted to the corporation on 12th. Jan., 1547/48; the nineteenth-century rebuilding allowed the trustees and feoffees to support twenty almsmen and to meet in a boardroom. Bond, a draper, was mayor in 1497-98: he also bequeathed £20 towards building a wall at the Charterhouse and 20 marks for completion of Whitefriars' cloister; he owned much property, becoming an assignee of "The Sterre" inn on 20th. June, 1500 (see PA371/1); his brass (PA2409/2/11/2 is a rubbing) was in St. Michael's and a memorial window in St. Mary's Hall Great Hall. Bond died on 18th. Mar., 1506/07 and was buried in St. Michael's. His grandson Thomas (as is shown on the hospital wall) claimed the lands by a Chancery suit, but the corporation won them in James I's time; in 1553 the property of the charity was in Earl Street, Harnall, Radford, Coundon (all in Coventry), Arley, Bulkington and Fillongley (all in Warwickshire) and Bitteswell (Leicestershire) - it had retained all but the first-, third- and fourth-named places' lands three centuries later. See PA101/147 for the Hospital. See PA242/3/27 for trustees' sale of part of the charity's Radford land to Newcombe Estates Co. Ltd. in 1914. See PA263/8. In 1492 Bond was a sheriff.
