This draper sheltered the future Queen of Bohemia at Palace Yd. in 1605; mayor in 1609/10, he was the first master of the Drapers' Company as reconstituted under its 1610 charter (see PA99/1) - he was to be ulnager in 1622, when the Weavers' Company alleged that he connivingly favoured the Drapers' (see PA100/12/7), having been appointed during Elizabeth I's reign (see PA468/2/2/1/1,3,5,6). A Drapers' Company warden, 1596 (PA468/2/3/29-31). M.P. for Coventry in 1614 and 1621, when he opposed Court interests (see T.W. Whitley, "The Parliamentary Representation of the City of Coventry" (searchroom library reference 324.4248) pp.68-73). By his will made in 1623, Hopkins founded a yearly sermon at St. Michael's. Hopkins was appointed Earl St. Ward under the city's 1621 charter (see PA21/1/21).
