This draper sheltered the future Queen of Bohemia at Palace Yd. in 1605; mayor in 1609/10, he was the first master of the Drapers' Company as reconstituted under its 1610 charter (see PA99/1) - he was to be ulnager in 1622, when the Weavers' Company alleged that he connivingly favoured the Drapers' (see PA100/12/7), having been appointed during Elizabeth I's reign (see PA468/2/2/1/1,3,5,6). A Drapers' Company warden, 1596 (PA468/2/3/29-31). M.P. for Coventry in 1614 and 1621, when he opposed Court interests (see T.W. Whitley, "The Parliamentary Representation of the City of Coventry" (searchroom library reference 324.4248) pp.68-73). By his will made in 1623, Hopkins founded a yearly sermon at St. Michael's. He was a sheriff in 1598. See PA85/3. PA122/3 is a charities-list featuring the Hopkins family. He owned a close near Charterhouse Mill in 1611 (N.S.) - see PA152/37/1. Hopkins was appointed Earl St. Ward under the city's 1621 charter (see PA21/1/21). Hopkins was a feoffee of the Priory estate (BA/B/A/25/1; BA/B/A/26/1: PA56/99/5), a Pinley estate (BA/B/P/432/5), Alderford Mill (BA/B/P/432/6), Scott's lands (BA/B/Q/9/5-7), the Drapers' Company (BA/C/H/6/1: PA468/5/1/2-4; PA468/5/3/9/1 (1613); PA468/5/3/39/4; PA468/5/3/43/21; PA468/5/3/51/1; PA468/5/3/69/7; PA468/5/3/72/8 (1591)), Bond's Hospital (BA/D/D/34/2; BA/D/D/36/8; BA/D/D/50/37), Bablake Boys (BA/D/G/13/1; BA/D/G/16/6), Swillington's Charity (BA/D/BE/9/4) and Warren's Gift (BA/D/BH/3/5). Hopkins had premises in Earl St. (see BA/A/D/34/6: PA56/73/3 (1597)), where he held a Bond's Hospital tenement in 1609 (see BA/D/D/26/4). See BA/A/D/135/1. Active in the corporation, 1603-22.
