The Benedictine Priory of St. Mary was consecrated in 1043, plundered supposedly by Bishop Robert de Limesey in c.1100 and turned into a fortress by Robert Marmion in 1143. Hugh de Nonant (Bishop, 1188-98) rebuilt parts of the priory, but a new start had to await the mid-thirteenth century's comparative prosperity. Chapels were added during the later Middle Ages and most of the recent excavations have been of fourteenth- or fifteenth-century structures. In 1404 and 1459 Parliament met at the priory, and in 1462 the corporation agreed to divert the city walls so as to accommodate its pools near the River Sherbourne. After the Dissolution the priory was rapidly plundered again for stone used in secular buildings.
