So-called since at least the late twelfth century, by 1410/11 Earl Street stretched from Mill Lane to Broadgate, but the eastern section soon became Jordan Well. In the thirteenth century the street contained many substantial houses, shops and crypts; one house is described as of stone, another as a mansion, and the Whytecelar stood on the western corner of Much Park Street and Earl Street.
