Supposedly begun in 1355, the city walls were under construction for over a century, involving considerable disruption and consequent opposition to paying for their raising and upkeep; they were built with stone taken from their site and from Cheylesmore Park and Allesley. By the early-seventeenth century the walls were in decay, but they were refortified during the Civil War , only to be "slighted" on Charles II's orders in 1662 because Coventry harboured rebels. Much of the wall was removed over the next two centuries but lengths remain.
