"Spon" means a "span" or expanse or extended piece of land. The district must have predated the earliest deeds which name it (by 1200 - see BA/H/H/55/1). Spon Street runs westward to Spon Bridge; the portions beyond Spon Gate formed the suburb of Spon End, one of the four mediaeval extensions outside the city walls; in 1837, houses which lay on the southern side of the street before it crosses the Sherbourne were called Summer Row. There was a Spon Bridge in the thirteenth century which was rebuilt in 1771, partly with stone from Spon Gate. The part within the ring road is the site of several mediaeval houses, mostly transplanted.
