A draper, Colonel John Barker was mayor in 1634-35 and 1644-45, in the latter term being allowed to hold the post simultaneously with the city's governorship. Barker was related to the Jessons, and with Simon Norton gave £1,000 towards a parliamentary loan in Nov., 1640; he promised £50 for the city's defence in 1642; with Thomas Basnett, he seized a magazine from the beseiging royalists. Barker becamer mayor for the second time because George Monk was thought to be too royalist.
