Giving the following details for each policeman: name, date of appointment, age, height, colours of complexion, eyes and hair, distinguishing marks, previous occupation, marital status, length of previous service in police, army or navy, place of birth and last fixed residence, reports of misconduct and punishment (fine, reprimand, dismissal etc.) meted out. The register seems to have been started in about 1862 and completed around 1886. The entries, however, go back to appointments made earlier, including one in 1836. Policemen in the register are noted at piece level.
Presscutting stuck on inside front cover regarding death of Thomas Henry Prosser, first Chief Constable of Coventry under the Municipal Reform Act, from "Coventry Standard" dated 3 Jun 1879.
Notes on page 124 that Mrs Ada Banbury appointed female searcher on 11 Dec 1878, that police force increased by 2 men, Jan 1882, and by 4 men, Dec 1886; stuck on inside back cover - letter from Town Clerk to Chief Superintendent Norris regarding increase in police force in 1886.
