Son of John Craven of Whitley and Henry Green's daughter Maria Rebecca, Craven inherited his barony in 1764 - his family were the principal landowners immediately east of Coventry until just after the First World War; through his mother, Craven acquired the manor of Walsgrave and held 460a. in that parish when it was enclosed in 1756 (cf. CCA/2/3/111/20.LVIII); in 1778 Craven's lands were divided into five holdings (including Walsgrave Hill Farm with new farm buildings, 364a. and ten village cottages) - the Greens had already developed mining on Walsgrave Outer Waste. At the 1768 general election, Edward Roe Yeo of Normanton Turville, Leicestershire, was Craven's successful candidate for the representation of Coventry. See PA21/2/47 for some of the family land.
