Having recited: firstly, that Thomas Jesson (of Coventry, gentleman), deceased brother of William Jesson (of Coventry, esq.), by his will (24 Aug [1653]) provided for two poor men or women in Ford's Hospital upon the nomination of his brother or that man's heirs, interest from £200 going towards their maintenance, and made William his sole executor who has proved it; secondly, that William Jesson has paid the mayor, bailiffs and commonalty of Coventry the £200; and thirdly, that on 26 Jul [1654] Coventry corporation leased to Henry Smyth [whittawer], Thomas Love [draper], Matthew Smyth [mercer], Samuel Snell [draper] and George Earle [mercer] (aldermen) and Robert Beake [draper] and Joseph Chambers [clothier] (gentlemen) Conduit Meadow (occupied by Robert Bedford of Coventry, gentleman [clothier]), which forms part of Priors Orchard Ground [,Harnall] from 18 Jul [1654] for two months at a peppercorn rent: therefore, in consideration of that £200, the corporation grants to Henry Smyth et al the meadow in perpetuity at £12 per annum which will be used towards the two paupers' maintenance in twelve months' time so that they will receive 2/- per week and the residue be devoted towards the hospital's repair or finding the said poor people clothing or bedding; if the money become three months in arrears, H. Smyth et al shall stand seised to the corporation's use of the meadow for one thousand years; the corporation covenants for further assurance within seven years and Coventry.
